Standard Operating Procedure for Emergency Exit Sign Verification

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlined provides a comprehensive framework for verifying exit sign boards in industrial settings, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and enhancing overall building safety. The SOP covers procedures for inspecting emergency power backup time, illumination levels, battery systems, cleanliness, and proper erection of exit signs. It establishes a monthly frequency for verification and provides a standardized reporting format for documenting findings. Responsibility for implementation rests with electrical engineers/officers and electricians, overseen by the Electrical Manager/HOD to ensure thorough execution and maintenance of safety standards.

1. PURPOSE:

This SOP outlines procedures for verifying exit sign boards. It details inspection steps and criteria for compliance. The SOP guides report writing on verification findings. It ensures adherence to safety standards. Proper documentation enhances overall building safety.

2. SCOPE:

This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlines the systematic procedure for verifying exit signs in industrial settings. It ensures compliance with safety regulations and confirms the functionality of exit signage. By following this SOP, personnel can conduct thorough inspections and maintain a safe environment for occupants during emergencies.

3. How to Do:

3.1 Emergency Power Backup Time:

  • Switch off the main supply so that the Exit Signs get energized by their built in battery system.
  • Note down the starting time of emergency backup drill.
  • Round the whole facility, to check each and every Exit sign is illuminated or not.
  • Damaged or Broken Exit signs should be replaced or repaired.
  • Note down the end time of emergency backup.

The emergency power backup should not be less than 90 minutes.

3.2 Illumination of Exit Signs

  • Place lux meter in front of the Exit Sign Board at a distance of 1 meter.
  • Lux Sensor should be right in front of Exit Sign.
  • Do measure the lux of every Sign Board using Lux meter by setting the meter at Range A as described in the SOP of LUX METER.
  • The Lux level should not be less than 10 lux for every Exit Sign Board to fulfill the acceptance criteria of illumination.
  • Exit Signs having lower Lux Level should be replaced.

Result: Lux of the every Exit Sign should not be less than 10 lux.

 3.3 Battery System

As we know, Exit Sign Boards have their own built in battery system, so no need of any emergency backup for Exit Sign Boards. Make sure the following points only:

  • Switch off the main supply of the exit sign boards floor by floor and visit that floor.
  • Start the inspection of facility.
  • Built in battery system should be good enough to fulfill the demand of 90 minutes backup.
  • The built in battery should not heat, in case of warming effect, replace that board.

3.4 Exit Sign Type

·         The Exit Sign Type which are mostly used in facility are LED Type Exit Lamp of 6w.

3.5 Cleanliness

  • Every Sign board should be cleaned.
  • Use stair to reach the board.
  • Clean the board using shiner and cloth.
  • Cleaning of the Exit Sign Board is important, because it decreases the lux, efficiency of built in battery system and overall fruitful efficiency of the board.

3.6 Erection

  • The Exit Signs are erected/installed in such a way that they direct towards the emergency pathway as per the demand of building safety inspection team.
  • In case of wrong erection, do consult with the facility’s responsible personnel of Electrical department and accommodate the changes.
  • The Exit Sign Board should be proper and tight to their fixed point, do tight the loose or tilted boards.

4. Frequency of Emergency Exit Signs Verification:

Frequency for Emergency Light Verification is once in a month.

Measurement is performed after one month to fulfill the audit requirement. International Building Code (IBC), 2015 edition.
