Motor Maintenance Inspection standard operating procedure (SOP)

Procedure

  1. Examine the insulation on the motor enameled wire to check whether it is faulty. Replace it if it is faulty.

  2. In the connection panel, double-check the connections. Tighten them up if they're too loose.

  3. Examine the bearings. It must have bearing grease (lubricant). It can also be calculated by listening to the motor's sound.

  4. Examine the motor to ensure it is securely fastened to the base. Tighten the nut bolt if it is loose.

  5. Inspect the motor for cleanliness.

  6. Check the motor's temperature, as excessive temperatures impact the motor's performance and operational efficiency. Motor temperature is measured with a pyrometer (an electric thermometer intended to monitor high temperatures) or an infrared scanner (lower red rays).

  7. Determine the resistance of the motor winding and the resistance between the motor winding and the motor frame. For this, a mega ohm meter is employed. If you measure the resistance two or three times and get the maximum figure, you're OK. If not, replace or overhaul the motor. A 240 v megger can be used for motors with a voltage capability of 240v or less, and a 500 v megger can be used for motors with a voltage capacity of 240v or more. A megger with a voltage of 1000 volts should be utilized.

  8. Check the motor's load, which includes measuring the voltage and current it consumes in relation to the rating; if not, repair or replace the motor.

Points to check during motor maintenance

  1. Examine the motor cables to check whether the insulation is deteriorating.

  2. Inspect the connection in the connection panel to ensure that it is not loose.

  3. Inspect the bearing and its grease.

  4. Assure the motor is clean.

  5. Inspect the motor's temperature. Excessive use has a negative impact on motor function and ageing.

  6. Determine the motor's winding resistance.

  7. Examine the motor's load.
